If you’re building a new home, replacing a septic system, or making changes to an existing system in Lanark County, you’ll need a permit before any work begins.
Who Handles Permits?
Septic permits in Mississippi Mills, Beckwith, Lanark Highlands, Carleton Place, and Tay Valley Township are administered by the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) through the Mississippi-Rideau Septic System Office (MRSSO).
The Process
Step 1: Soil Testing — A qualified person evaluates your soil through test pits and percolation tests.
Step 2: System Design — A qualified designer creates your system plan based on soil results, home size, and lot layout.
Step 3: Permit Application — Submitted to the MVCA at 10970 Highway 7 in Carleton Place.
Step 4: Permit Approval — Plan for 2-4 weeks during busy seasons.
Step 5: Installation & Inspection — After installation, the MVCA inspector confirms compliance before backfilling.
